Thursday 22nd February: Europa League Playoff Round Bets

Shakhtar Wingers & Slovakian Humdingers

đź’° Punt: Lemas Eguinaldo Over 1.5 Shots
đź“— Bookie: Bet365
🎲 Odds: 3.00 (2/1)
⚽️ Game: Marseille vs. Shakhtar Donestk

Marseille have sacked Gennaro Gattuso this week after their 1-0 loss to Brest at the weekend. The Italians time in charge of the French outfit can be summed by that famous GIF of his…

Although, it was largely the latter hence his dismissal. Usually I’d be reluctant to bet on a team where there are unknowns regarding managerial changes and team news etc. However, Marseille have moved swiftly to appoint Jean-Louis Gasset. For the casual readers who are thinking “Who the fuck is that guy?”

He’s the bloke who led the Ivory Coast at the start of the recent African Cup of Nations tournament. The bloke who led them to third in a group containing Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. The bloke who when qualification to the knock-outs was on the line, masterminded a 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea with his side going off 1.40 (2/5) favourites to win the match. Long story short, they sacked him after the loss and were looking towards the future, only to be granted a reprieve and qualify as one of the best third-placed ranked teams. And then went on to win the fucking lot!

Right then, on to another unknown. Lemos Eguinaldo. Quite possibly the most Football Manager regen name of all time. Someone you’d sign from Corinthians in 2034 when you’ve just qualified for the Champions League with Gateshead.

The 19-year-old Brazilian had 4 shots in the first leg last week, scoring the equaliser for the Ukrainian side in the 92nd minute. However, it was the first time he’d actually started a competitive match for Shakhtar, he’s made 5 sub appearances in the league and is still averaging 1.2 shots per game despite only featuring for 27 minutes on average. The 3.00 (2/1) available for Lemas Eguinaldo to have Over 1.5 Shots with Bet365 looks an enticing price assuming the young winger gets rewarded with another start.

đź’° Punt: David Hancko Anytime Goalscorer
đź“— Bookie: William Hill
🎲 Odds: 15.00 (14/1)
⚽️ Game: Roma vs. Feyenoord

There were a couple of betting angles I liked for this one, mainly anything Feyenoord shot related. Daniele De Rossi has been seemingly more than comfortable allowing the opposition to get shots off from distance during his interim spell in charge. A prime example coming in their 3-0 win away at Frosinone at the weekend, Frosinone had a whopping 25 shots yet only managed an Expected Goals figure of 1.46, showing De Rossi’s side to be quite compact defensively with the majority of the relegation threatened sides attempts coming from outside the box.

Soooo, why have I settled on a Slovakian centre-back who has 2 goals for his club side all season?

Hancko took and scored a penalty during Feyenoord’s 2-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam earlier this month, their regular penalty-taker Mexican forward Santiago Gimenez actually missed that game through injury so there’s no guarantee he doesn’t resume his duties, however, considering he missed his last two attempts vs FC Twente in January & vs RKC Waalwijk back in November, I feel the 15.00 (14/1) on offer for the centre-back to take and score a spot-kick if the Dutch side are to be awarded one is a very large price.

Feyenoord penalty data is taken from Transfermarkt, click here to read more. David Hancko’s penalty data is also taken from the same website, click here for the Slovakian’s penalty history.
